Fire at Jones County hunting lodge kills one
TRENTON, Jones County - There was a fatal house fire in Jones County late Sunday night.
Jones County Sheriff Danny Heath confirmed the fire on Ten Mile Fork Road was fatal. Ten Mile Fork Road is near Trenton.
According to the homeowner, the fire started around 9 p.m. on November 12. The building is one of two main buildings on his property and it's been in their family for over 100 years.
The building was being used as a hunting lodge by a father and son pair from Wilson. The owner said they have been using it for years when they come bear hunting.
The owner said that there is no electricity in the building. He believes the father and son were using some type of heater which malfunctioned.
When they tried to get the heater out of the building at the start of the fire, the fire spread throughout the structure.
The son was able to run to the next house to get help, but the father was trapped inside and died as a result, the homeowner said.
It was a long night for rescue crews and sheriff's deputies working the fatal scene, and Sheriff Heath said more information would be released later today.
