Farmers: Strawberry crop weeks ahead of schedule

WINTERVILLE, Pitt County - Area farmers look forward to a warm-up this week, but many took precautions to protect berry farms during the weekend's cold snap.

Mike Skinner pulled back the cover to check on his three acres and 45,000 strawberry plants at Strawberries on 903 Monday. "Normally we wouldn't even be considering protecting the crop this early normally its 30 days out from harvest we protect it. We've had a mild winter a couple cold spells but this crop is just really advanced," Skinner said. Skinner found the fruit had survived the cold and is on track to harvest weeks ahead of schedule. He says he hopes to pick berries the first week or two of April.
