Emerald Isle PD enlists help of dive team in search for missing teen

EMERALD ISLE, Carteret County - The Emerald Isle Police Department said Monday morning that despite the US Coast Guard's suspension of a search for a missing 17-year-old swimmer on Sunday afternoon that it is continuing to do what it can to continue efforts to locate the teenager.

Two swimmers, a 16 and 17-year-old disappeared in the ocean near the 7900 block of the beach strand in Emerald Isle at 6:08 p.m. on Saturday. The 16-year-old was pulled from the water by lifeguards and remains in critical condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to EIPD.

Though the Coast Guard had to suspend its search at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday to respond to other emergencies in the area, EIPD and Emerald Isle Fire personnel are continuing to search the shoreline and surrounding area and have called in a dive team from Atlantic Beach to check the waters where the teen was last seen. The Coast Guard's 18-hour search covered 130 square miles and included a 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water (SPC-SW) crew from Station Emerald Isle, a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Fort Macon, the 87-foot patrol boat Coast Guard Cutter Shearwater out of Virginia, and a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City.

Neither teenager has been identified by authorities.
