NEW BERN, Craven County - A ten-foot long alligator found dead by a couple in the Neuse River in New Bern on Saturday was likely dead for several days before being found, NC Wildlife officials tell NewsChannel 12.

Lauren Weichinger and her fiancee, Kyle Radford, found the alligator in the Neuse River on Saturday. The couple was fishing when they discovered the gator.

Weichinger says the reptile appeared to have been shot. Officials cannot confirm the cause of death but say the alligator was already in a state of decomposition when it was pulled from the water.

North Carolina hasn't allowed alligator hunting since 1973, though it has been considering re-opening alligator hunting on a limited basis.
