Crystal Coast Fire Academy students test skills in controlled burn

MOREHAD CITY, Carteret County - Carteret Community College's Crystal Coast Fire Academy put their skills to the test on Saturday, conducting a live burn simulation on their Arendell Street Campus. The house they burned is located on the future site of the planned Culinary and Hospitality Center set to open fall of 2019.

"The live structural burn gives students a chance to be involved in live fire evolutions," said Kevin White, fire rescue training coordinator at Carteret Community College. "These learning opportunities don't come about too often with an actual home."

The Academy, in conjunction with a fire control class trained on fire tactics with several small burns before burning the house to the ground. Fire attack crews went into the home, located and extinguished fires. Students outside could observe smoke condition changes throughout the fire stages.
