Crowds gather for Lidl grand opening in Greenville
GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Hundreds waiting outside Greenville's newest grocery store Thursday morning for the grand opening celebration of Lidl - the European-based grocery chain that opened five locations simultaneously in North Carolina and five more elsewhere in the US.
The discount chain is making an aggressive expansion in the US following long-term success in Europe that has seen it grow to more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries.
"I went in and saw the prices and the prices are great for a family of mine ... of six. We'll be back and most likely shop here a whole lot," said Justin Roberson, who was the first person in line for the Greenvile Lidl opening.
Besides the Greenville location, Lidl also opened a store in Kinston on Thursday.
Being there early on Thursday had it perks, as Lidl handed out wooden coins to the first 100 people in line, which earned them a chance to earn store gift cards.
Two other locations are set to open later this summer in eastern North Carolina - Havelock and Morehead City.
