NEW BERN, Craven County - Birthdays and anniversaries are just some of the milestones people restrict their dining to. But what if you're dining out can serve a greater purpose?

The CarolinaEast Foundation and local restaurants are teaming up to give your dining new meaning. On Tuesdays in September (Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26), Dining Out Against Cancer events will be held at certain restaurants in Craven and Pamlico counties. A percentage of the proceeds and sales will go toward the foundation. Casey Aylward tells diners at his restaurant about a campaign that's close to his heart. His dad died from cancer five years ago, at age 63. "He was very smart and very kind," Aylward said. "Everybody knew him in New Bern and nobody had a bad thing to say about him. He was just a good guy."

The community is losing many good guys and gals. "Cancer rates are staggering in Eastern North Carolina so we felt it necessary to bring a comprehensive cancer center to our community," said Amy Willis of the CarolinaEast Foundation. "It is a place where our cancer patients can go and have everything done under one roof and hopefully ease their cancer journey." One way you can help is head to one of 24 restaurants in Craven and Pamlico counties where, on every Tuesday in September, 10 percent of the proceeds go to the Cancer Center in New Bern. "When cancer hits and somebody passes away, the entire town knows about it and the entire town feels it," said Aylward said. "So when we can all get together and raise money to help battle it, that's always a good thing." Organizers say this is the first time they're doing this. They hope doing this will help raise thousands of dollars during the campaign. Half Time Pub & Grub has already donated $5,000. The completion of the SECU Comprehensive Cancer Center at CarolinaEast Medical Center is scheduled for January 2019. Here's a list of participating restaurants in Craven and Pamlico counties.
