Crash closes part of NC 24 near Newport Thursday morning

NEWPORT, Carteret County - A traffic accident that closed part of NC 24 near Newport for a short time midday Thursday did not result in any life-threatening injuries, police said.

A man is believed to have blacked out while driving, said North Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Robert Melby. Shortly after doing so, he struck the back of a work truck, spinning 180 degrees and colliding with another vehicle.

Only the man who blacked out was injured, suffering a broken hip and a broken nose after flipping his vehicle as a result of the crash, Melby said. The other two drivers of the affected vehicles were able to drive away from the scene was the on-site investigation was concluded.
