CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - The Charleston County Coroner's Office has released the name of a child who drowned in the Stono River Sunday.

Officials say 11-year-old Khandi Corona Whitley of Washington, North Carolina was the child whose life was lost after being swept away by the river's current.

Crews with several agencies searched the river on Sunday and Monday in attempt to find the child. Her body was recovered about a half mile from the Limehouse Bridge Monday afternoon.

"The family was swimming on a nearby sandbar when a female swimmer became distressed and was taken away by the current," explained Ryan Kunitzer, fire marshal for St. John's Fire District.
