NEW BERN, Craven County - Gov. Roy Cooper was in eastern North Carolina on Tuesday, starting his tour in New Bern where he served as the keynote speaker for the Partners in Education spring luncheon.

More than 600 educators, business leaders and elected officials came together at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center for the event.

Cooper discussed his plans for education in the state and how he wants to invest in teachers specifically through stipends and salary increases. The state should be in the top 10 in education by 2025, Cooper said of his goal.

Organizers of the event say Cooper's goal aligns with their missions.

"He ran on an education platform for our teachers and we decided to allow him to speak directly to them," Darlene Brown, Craven County PIE executive director, said.

PIE is a nonprofit that provides funding through grants and special programs to classrooms and schools within the Craven County Schools system.
