Coast Guard medevacs man off coast of Morehead City


MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - The Coast Guard responded to and medevaced an injured sailor near Morehead City on Thursday.

The watchstanders station in Wilmington received a report of a man alone aboard his sailboat who had fallen and hurt his shoulder. The call came in at 4:15 and a 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water crew along with a lifeboat crew launched from Station Fort Macon at about 4:23 p.m. The crew arrived five minutes later and took the man to Portside Marina. He was then taken by Morehead City Fire EMS to Carteret Health Care in Morehead City. "We are always ready to assist mariners in need," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Raymond Ortiz, coxswain for the case, in a press release. "We were glad to work with our partners, Morehead City Fire EMS, to get this man to the medical care he needed as quickly as possible." The injured person said he is making plans to retrieve his sailboat.
