HOBUCKEN, Pamlico County - The Coast Guard responded to a call of an injured boater near Hobucken on Friday.

Watchstanders at the Sector North Carolina Command Center in Wilmington received a report at about 5:30 p.m. that a 23-foot, recreational fishing boat ran aground and a 64-year-old man had injured his back. Officials from Station Hobucken launched at 5:40 p.m. and arrived about 10 minutes later to the area in Goose Creek. The Coast Guard assisted the main, gave him oxygen and transported him to land where he was taken by Pamlico County EMS to the hospital in New Bern. "Even experienced boaters familiar with a given area can run aground," said Petty Officer 3rd Class John Zegarra, coxswain for the case. "We responded as quickly as possible to provide first-responder medical care and transportation for the man, and were happy to get him to Pamlico County EMS for further evaluation."
