HOBUCKEN, Pamlico County - Three passengers on a boat that ran aground were assisted by the Coast Guard near Hobucken on Sunday.

The boat ran aground in Mouse Harbor. A Coast Guard unit from Wilmington received the call around 3 p.m. that a 16-foot pleasure craft with one adult and two children had run aground after taking on water in high winds and waves.

The Coast Guard arrived, took the passengers on board and transferred them to Oyster Creek boat ramp in Swan Quarter. Arrangements were being made to salvage the vessel Monday or Tuesday.

"To ensure safety on the water, boaters should always check the local weather for the area they are operating in," said Chief Petty Officer Nathan Jones, officer-in-charge at Station Hobucken. "This goes hand in hand with having the required safety equipment for their type and size of vessel. Luckily in this situation, life jackets were worn by all three passengers."
