Children's Museum prepares to take over building
JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - The Zing Zumm Children's Museum of Jacksonville is now just months away from opening its doors and on Friday, it crosses another major threshold en route to that goal.
Board members will sign a purchase agreement for the landmark Boomtown building in downtown Jacksonville on Friday in a small ceremony. The building is located at 625 New Bridge Street.
Museum board member Liz Owens, who has been working on the development of a children's museum in Jacksonville since 2005, was jubilant with the development.
"The excitement is overwhelming," she said. "With this location... we'll help revitalize downtown Jacksonville."
Owens said once the museum has ownership of the building, it will move forward with the installation of sprinkler systems and some minor construction to get the building ready for opening. Owens said due to financial constraints, the museum would likely open in phases, with the first phase hopefully ready to open in early fall.
"We want it to be right when we open," Owens said. "We're going to do it to the best of our ability."
The museum's board has held a variety of fundraisers in Jacksonville over the last several years, getting the funding necessary to not only open but then operate the museum.
The museum is a 501C(3) non-profit organization. You can send tax-deductible donations and/or pledges to Children's Museum of Jacksonville, P.O. Box 12496, Jacksonville, NC 28546 or call (910) 650-2769. To learn more about the project, check out the museum's Facebook page and website.
