REELSBORO, Pamlico County - Pamlico County Sheriff's officers arrested and charged a mother after investigators say her child accidentally took an opiate-based narcotic. Virginia Elizabeth Humphrey was charged with felony child abuse and given a $30,000 bond. She was placed in the Pamlico County Detention Center.

911 operators had received a call around 5 p.m. Friday, asking for medical assistance with a 3-year-old child who had possibly taken adult medication. First responders arrived at 242 Longleaf Drive in Reelsboro from where the child was transported to Carolina East Medical Center.

Deputies made contact with Humphrey, the mother of the child, who stated to them that the child had possibly taken non-narcotic medication which belonged to her. However, upon evaluation at the hospital, medical staff determined the child had taken some type of opiate-based narcotic. Investigators then gathered evidence and interviews at the scene and proceeded to arrest Humphrey. The Pamlico County Department of Social Services assisted with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Pamlico County Sheriff's Office at 252-745-3101.
