Ceremony held to remember servicemen killed in military plane crash
JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - The Freedom Fountain is a special place in Jacksonville. Friday, those who died in Monday's military plane crash were honored in an observance by the city at noon at the fountain.
People gathered for the ceremony to remember the 15 Marines and one sailor who were on the plane that crashed in Mississippi. Seven of the servicemen -- six Marines and the sailor -- were from Camp Lejeune. All 16 servicemen were remembered at the ceremony.
"It's important we remember every Marine's sacrifice, not just the combat wounded or killed, but those who sacrifice their lives for us every single day," said Craig Stephens, Command Advisor for Wounded Warriors.
The ceremony began with a prayer and concluded with those gathered singing "God Bless America."
The fountain this week has been in mourning mode, spraying only one solo stream of water in the center to honor the lost servicemen.
