Sheriff Asa Buck received a service award for significant contributions and ten years of dedication and service as sheriff to the State of North Carolina and the citizens of Carteret County. The award was presented at the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association's 95th Annual Training Conference held at the Sea Trail Convention Center in Sunset Beach, North Carolina.
The Association's newly-installed president, Sheriff Carson Smith, of Pender County, in describing the award said, "Sheriffs play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the citizens of North Carolina, and it is a great privilege to honor those who have served for ten or more consecutive years as sheriff in their communities."
This is the sixth year that the ten-year service award has been presented to North Carolina Sheriffs' Association members, and it is a symbol of the organization's commitment to serving the sheriffs of North Carolina.
"It is a tremendous honor to serve the great citizens of Carteret County. I would like to share this honor with my deputies, staff, and the citizens of our county. I couldn't do this job over the past 10-plus years without the support of my staff and especially the support of the citizens," Buck said.
In 2006, Asa was elected Sheriff of Carteret County. Since being elected as Carteret County Sheriff, Asa has worked on fighting crime with drug roundups, initiating a prescription drug take-back program and hiring more deputies. In his tenure Asa has implemented improvements and upgrades in the county 911 communications system and the county detention center, implemented new programs and initiatives aimed at addressing the prescription drug epidemic facing our community and has overseen the creation and expansion of the county's multi-jurisdictional special response team.
Asa is currently serving in his third term as Carteret County Sheriff.
