Cancer survivors spend day fishing off Atlantic Beach

ATLANTIC BEACH, Carteret County - Dozens of Cancer survivors and their caretakers spent the day fishing their troubles away off of Atlantic Beach on Thursday.

NewsChannel 12's Nicole Griffin joined the group aboard the Captain Stacy 4 as they took some well-deserved time to enjoy themselves.

The trip, set up by Vidant Support and Survivorship, is meant to give patients a break with some fun and relaxed fishing. Many of the people participating in this year's trip had never been deep sea fishing, but had it on their bucket lists. Participants get the chance to use nature as a coping device and connect with other survivors who may have had similar experiences with the disease.

"Most of the survivors here probably don't know each other today," Jenny Higgins, Vidant Support and Survivorship Coordinator, said. "But it's an opportunity for engagement and meeting other people like you who have been through their own experiences, but a similar journey as well."

This is the second time that Vidant has held this event. Based on its popularity and success, the event is likely to be held again in the future.

The event is open to any Cancer survivor and their caretakers in the Carteret area and Vident holds free events like this one every month. The next stop is next month's visit to the "Simply Natural Creamery" in Ayden.
