Brothers celebrate 60 years of family business
NEW BERN, Craven County - Trent Cadillac Buick GMC is celebrating being in operation in New Bern for 60 years.
Donald Deichmann opened his car dealership in downtown New Bern in 1957. They then moved to James City in the 1960s. He died in 1970 and his son Mike took over. Mike's brother Pete joined him in 1972.
Mike Deichmann also appears in the commercials with the tag line "Our people do give us the edge." He said that is true, his employees are what has helped the business be successful for six decades.
"I think it's because we include the employees in everything we do, we have profit sharing, everyone is involved, sales and service," Mike Deichmann said. "We try to make every customer a customer for life."
"The big key is we have been very lucky with employees," Pete Deichmann said. "We hired several straight out of high school and they are still here and they are in their 50s."
The brothers said the business has grown from its early beginnings. They now have an eight acre lot with three buildings and they say the sell 130-150 cars a month. And they said they are hope they are making their dad proud, by following his advice.
"He wasn't short on advice," Mike Deichmann said. "He would get me in the car and I would wish I never got in the car, but I miss him, and I reference how would he do every day."
"His motto was square deal or no deal," Pete Deichmann said.
