Boy Scout earns National Eagle Scout Project of the Year award
MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - A Carteret county teenager who recently won a regional honor as a Boy Scout learned Thursday his project has picked up a national honor.
Blake Deaton raised money to create a sensory room at Morehead City Middle School. It was part of a Eagle Scout project and a way to help out his twin brother Shane, who inspired him to create the project. Blake Deaton remodeled an unused room at the school and turned it into a school for kids like his brother.
The room included sensory objects like sand and low lights to helps kids like Shane when they need a break to calm down at school.
Blake Deaton learned recently his project won a regional award from the Boy Scouts of America. That made him eligible for the national award. His father, Jeff Deaton, let us know that his son got a call with some very good news on Thursday.
"We just got a call from the Boy Scouts of America national office that Blake was chosen as the national winner for the National Eagle Scout Project of the Year award," Jeff Deaton said in an email. "This is a huge deal and an unbelievable honor."
Jeff Deaton said BSA will be national film crew to do a production video about Blake Deaton's project. Click below to watch the submission video Blake posted to YouTube.
