Body of 17-year-old swimmer missing off Emerald Isle located
EMERALD ISLE, Carteret County - The body of a missing 17-year-old swimmer has been located, Emerald Isle Police Chief James Reese confirmed to NewsChannel 12 Tuesday morning.
The swimmer, who has yet to be identified, went missing Saturday evening along with a 16-year-old swimmer, who was pulled ashore later that evening. The 16-year-old remains in critical condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Reese said the 17-year-old's body was found in the 7700 block of the Emerald Isle beach strand Tuesday morning - just two blocks down from where he was last seen along the beach strand.
The US Coast Guard searched more than 130 square miles for the 17-year-old over an 18 hour span before suspending its search Sunday afternoon due to other rescues that required the diversion of Coast Guard resources. The Emerald Isle Police and Fire units continued the search, along with a dive team from Atlantic Beach that was called in Monday.
