WASHINGTON, Beaufort County - A pair of men were caught in the act of stealing copper wire from a cable and internet provider, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

After responding to calls for the theft of copper wire from the Century Link Office on US 264 East near Washington on Saturday and Sunday, Beaufort County deputies set up a surveillance detail for Monday night. They had an idea of what they were looking for after seeing two men and a full-sized pickup truck on security camera footage.

According to BCSO, deputies watched as the two men loaded two spools of copper wire from the Century Link facility into their truck, later stopping and arresting them in a traffic stop.

Belvidere residents Paul Jordan, 49, and Charles Hunter, 67, were arrested and charged with three counts each of felony larceny and three counts of first degree trespass on an infrastructure. Both are being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $40,000 secured bond.

Additionally, investigators learned Tuesday that the truck being used by the two men was reported stolen out of Perquimans County, which will lead to the pair also being charged with felony possession of a stolen vehicle and felony larceny of a motor vehicle.
