Beaufort Co. STEM camp looks to introduce at-risk youth to future options

WASHINGTON, Beaufort County - The Beaufort County Police Activities League sponsors a summer camp that teaches at-risk youth about careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

For the past four weeks, kids from Beaufort and Pitt counties have been learning to sail right here on the Pamlico River. The organization behind the unique program is designed to help kids sail into success. The camp also includes flying planes, scuba diving and sailing. The Little Washington Sailing School also was a part of the camp, adding sailing to the program. With donations from the community and a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, each camper gets to attend for free. "It opened my eyes to many different careers, and many careers that I may not want," camp supervisor Maria Ponce Puga said. "I didn't get to do half the stuff that these kids did. It's just an amazing program." If you'd like to make a donation to the camp or learn more, click here to find out more information.
