Basketball filled with drugs found at Tyrrell Prison Work Farm

COLUMBIA, Tyrrell County - One day after it was announced that a 25th inmate at the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm was arrested for drug possession since May, now comes word of a basketball filled with drugs.

Tyrrell County Sheriff Darryl Liverman said deputies responded on Oct. 14 to a call of contrabound found. Prison staff saw a suspicious vehicle near the prison. After searching the perimeter of the prison, staff found a basketball on the yard with black tape around it.

When the basketball was opened, staff found packaged marijuana, loose tobacco, rolling papers, three cigarette lighters and three T-shirts. The Sheriff's Office took possession of the marijuana and it weighed in at 74.6 grams.

The investigation is ongoing.
