Bail bondsman recovering after being shot while trying to capture man
JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - The man shot Monday afternoon is recovering in a New Hanover County hospital Tuesday afternoon after attempting to pick up a man who had skipped bail and missed his Monday morning court appearance.
Corey Briggs spoke on the phone to NewsChannel 12 Tuesday afternoon from his hospital room along with his wife, Juaranita. Briggs works for 2nd Chance Bail Bonds and had gone to do a pickup on 39-year-old Michael Keith Jackson Monday afternoon, after Jackson had missed a court appearance for marijuana possession charges and destruction of evidence.
Juaranita Briggs says Jackson shot her husband in the left shoulder, with the bullet exiting through his neck. Corey Briggs is in stable condition, but Juaranita says he's lucky it was not a lot worse.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. along Annie Avenue in Jacksonville. Jackson was arrested later that day by Jacksonville Police and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a firearm into occupied vehicle inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He was booked into the Onslow County Jail on those charges, as well as several others from prior arrests.
