A suspect was shot in a deputy-involved shooting Thursday night in New Bern.

Officials said that the Craven County Sheriff's Office received a call of a possible burglary in progress at 613 West Thurman Road around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. When officers arrived on the scene, they were confronted by the suspect.

The suspect, Barrett Lee Listenbee, then pointed a weapon at the officers, officials said.

"A Craven County Deputy fired and wounded Listenbee," officials said in a press release. "Listenbee received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern."

Officials said the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave per protocol of the Sheriff’s Office.

District Attorney Scott Thomas issued the following statement on the shooting:

The Craven County Sheriff’s Office notified me just before midnight, June 7, 2018, that one of their deputies was in an officer-involved shooting. Per standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting, we contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to conduct a full investigation. SBI agents arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m. on June 8, 2018. Those agents thoroughly processed the scene, and interviewed both witnesses and deputies. The SBI will continue its investigation and submit a final report to me in the next few weeks for me to review and make a determination as to whether the shooting was justified.
I was briefed by the SBI this morning on the investigation. At this point, it appears the suspect illegally entered at least two houses in his neighborhood, armed with a shotgun. As deputies arrived, they confronted the suspect near one of the houses and he pointed the shotgun at the deputies. The suspect failed to obey commands to drop the weapon, and presented an apparent threat to the deputies. One of the deputies determined it was necessary to use force, based upon the danger presented by the situation. The suspect was injured, received immediate medical care, and is expected to survive. The suspect will be charged with Burglary, Assault by Pointing a Gun, and other possible charges.
