Onslow County man found guilty, convicted of sex crimes with child
JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County —
A Jacksonville man was found guilty and sentenced after he was charged with sexual acts with a 14-year-old female in 2017.
Ronald Alan Zey was found guilty by a jury on Friday on three counts of statutory sexual offense with a person 15 years of age or younger along with two counts of indecent liberties with a child. He was sentenced by a judge to three consecutive sentences between 192-291 months in the NC Department of Adult Correction.
Officials said from Jan. 1-March 5, 2017, Zey, 51, engaged in sexual acts with a 14-year-old who initially contacted him through a random prank call. District Attorney Ernie Lee said in a press release the two continued to communicate through text message for approximately a week before the defendant asked to meet her in person, picked her up in his van, and drove her to his residence, where the sex acts took place. The defendant testified that he had been seduced by the victim and essentially could not help himself from being with her, despite knowing that his behavior was wrong.
"This type of behavior with children has no place in this community or this society and this office will continue to work with law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting those charged with criminal acts against children," Lee said.
