More embezzlement, fraud charges filed against Grifton insurance agent
More charges were announced on Tuesday against a Grifton insurance agent already facing a bevy of charges related to embezzlement and defrauding clients.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced on Tuesday that David Pickett, 59, was arrested on 11 counts of obtaining property by false pretense and nine counts each of embezzlement and exploitation of an elder.
These charges are on top of two charges filed against him in June and 33 more of a similar nature from 2015. DOI investigators say Pickett deceived elderly adults to obtain funds, assets and property in Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Harnett, Jones, Lenoir, Pitt and Wayne counties.
"This is all part of the same investigation (from 2015)," DOI spokesperson Colin Day told NewsChannel 12. "The publicity has helped individuals realize they might have been part of this and then come forward to us."
Pickett was arrested on July 11 and booked into the Wayne County Detention Center on a $890,000 bond. He was slated to appear in court in Craven and Lenoir counties on Tuesday and also has upcoming court dates in Duplin and Wayne counties within the next week.
Anyone with information related to the investigation of Pickett is urged to contact Department Criminal Investigators at (919) 807-6840.
