Press box upgrade is first step toward Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium new look
GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Changes are coming soon to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. It's all starting with the press box.
"It was constructed in 1978 and it doesn't meet the needs that we have both for gameday and for stadium use," said Robert Brown, Assistant Director for Facilities Engineering and Architectural Services at ECU.
ECU recently go the go-ahead to take down several buildings on the south side of the stadium to make way for a new press box. The project will begin in December and won't be completed until 2019. A temporary box will be put in place during the 2018 football season.
The new press box will feature new suites to improve the experience for fans at the game. The project will also include enhancements to the tailgating area for fans as well as new sports medicine facilities near the stadium.
"Of course, each level will have different varieties of seating and so that's the preponderance of what it is, and enhancement of the gameday experience," Brown said.
Once completed, Brown estimates the project will cost between $55 million to $60 million. The funds will come entirely from boosters and sponsors.
"It's a really good thing that we have the support we have from Pirate nation and with our athletics," Brown said. "That allows us to improve the gameday experience and to modernize our facilities."
