Tropical Storm Fiona has Formed
NEW BERN, Cranven County - The sixth Tropical Storm of the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane season has formed in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean. The tropical wave we've been tracking for the last day or so has become better organized Wednesday night. As a result the National Hurricane Center at 5 am Thursday upgraded it to Tropical Storm Fiona.
The system is located about 1080 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Maximum winds of 45 mph. There is a small window of lighter wind shear over the next several days should allow it to intensify slightly. However, there is lots of dry air to the north of the storm and as it continues to track to the west-northwest into the central Atlantic the storm will also encounter more wind shear which will work to keep the storm weak.
Stay with StormTrack12 as we continue to monitor the tropics as we head towards the peak of the hurricane season in September.
