Preparing for winter weather and preventing frozen pipes
NEW BERN, Craven County - When temperatures get below freezing one of the biggest concerns are frozen pipes. Before the cold weather arrives, homeowners can prepare their homes to avoid disaster.
According to the Red Cross, all outdoor hoses should be drained, removed, and stored. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Keep the outside valve open so remaining water can expand without causing the pipe to burst.
Search your home for areas where supply lines are located in unheated areas. Make sure you check the garage, attic, crawl space, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes should be insulated in those areas.
Leave cabinets open. This allows warmer air to circulate around the pluming. Also let cold water drip from the faucet. Running water even at a trickle prevents pipes from freezing.
