NewsChannel 12 declares Friday a Severe Weather Alert Day
EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA - Today has been declared a Severe Weather Alert Day by StormTrack12 Meteorologist Les Still.
A cold front moves eastward through our area today and tonight. We start this morning with an area of strong storms stretching between Greensboro, Charlotte, to Columbia South Carolina. These storms will move east this morning and are scheduled to arrive in our area around noon.
There are several atmospheric ingredients that are already present over Eastern North Carolina this morning. Dew points have surged into the mid to upper 60s. Strong gusty southwesterly winds are also present from the ground up through 30,000 feet. These ingredients along with a couple other things are pointing to an atmosphere that will have the potential to become severe as these storms enter around noon.
Brief heavy downpours along with a damaging wind gust will be the main danger. However given the amount of wind energy present, an isolated tornado can't be ruled out.
This front will sweep off the coast later Saturday bringing quiet and cooler weather for the second half of the weekend.
