Local expert hears growing number of concerns about hearing loss
NEW BERN, Craven County - A recent Centers for Disease Control report reveals an estimated 40 million adults between the ages of 20 and 69 have hearing damage as a result of frequent exposure to loud noise.
Dr. Deana Katanic with CarolinaEast Medical Center said it's not just older people being affected.
Katanic says the rise in the use in earbuds, as "pretty much every thing we do is attached to our phones," has been a prime culprit.
There are steps you can take, however. The best protection is prevention, such as hearing protection and avoiding introducing loud music at close range to your ears.
A poll released by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association alongside the CDC report finds a significant percentage of Americans are concerned they'll lose their hearing later in life because of all the noise they are exposed to now.
