Joint investigation opened into abuse of child in Wayne County
GOLDSBORO, Wayne County - The Goldsboro Police Department and the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations is looking into a case where a child less than a month old sustained injuries as the result of child abuse.
The Goldsboro Police Department Investigative Services Bureau was notified on May 12 by the Patrol Shift Supervisor on duty there was an infant child at Vidant Medical Center Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Greenville. The child had extensive injuries that were attributed to child abuse.
The child was originally seen at Wayne Memorial Hospital on May 11 for breathing difficulties. The child was then airlifted to Vidant, where it was determined it had serious internal injuries. The child was determined to be less than a month old and, after further examination, it was determined the injuries were the result of child abuse.
Officials said in a press release the parents (Eric and Amanda Schmidt) reside within the city limits of Goldsboro. Eric Schmidt is an active duty airman assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base
