Greenville '98 Little League players reflect on World Series trip
GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Greenville has only had one Little League team make it to the Little League World Series before the North State team repeated that feat this year.
That team was the 1998 Tar Heel Little League team - and some of the glory of that trip remains alive today in the law office of Wayne Hardee, who managed that team. He is now partners with one of his former players from that team - Brack Massey.
For the two of them, those experiences from nearly two decades ago are as fresh as if they'd happened yesterday.
The success of this year's North State team has Massey and his fellow '98 Tar Heel alums reliving their time in Williamsport, Pa.
"It's such a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it just brings back so many memories," he said. "I cannot believe it's been 19 years."
Wayne Hardee's son, Justin, played shortstop on the '98 team
"There's 10 of us that still stay in touch on a regular basis that live in Eastern North Carolina," he said. "I think that was something established years ago that I don't forsee ever changing."
Wayne Hardee's office is filled with photos and memorabilia from his team's run. He told his former players that if another team from Greenville makes it back to Williamsport, he intended on making a road trip up to watch them play and says he plans to keep that pledge.
