Down East Wood Ducks are second-half champs after beating Buies Creek
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Down East Wood Ducks capped the second half of its Carolina League season in dramatic fashion on Monday.
The Wood Ducks captured the second-half Carolina League Southern Division title after beating Buies Creek, 10-3. The win allowed the Wood Ducks (38-32, second) to win their final three games over the Astros and take the division title. The two teams had a one-game playoff Monday after both finished tied for first at the end of the regular season on Sunday.

The win also means the Wood Ducks will be in the Carolina League playoffs, which begin Wednesday at Grainger Stadium in Kinston against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Wood Ducks (62-77 for season) got four runs in the second inning and never looked back. Churck Moorman had a RBI single before LaDarious Clark hit a three-run homer, his 13th of the season.
The Wood Ducks tacked on two more in the fifth and three in the sixth for all the cushion they would need. Wes Benjamin (10-7) was strong on the mound again, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 5.2 innings. Relievers Jeffrey Springs and Adam Choplick finished up from the bullpen.
