Ash Wednesday begins around the world
Today marks the beginning of Lent. The religious observation begins with Ash Wednesday and last for forty days until Easter. During this time, many worshipers choose to fast, repent, and practice abstinence. The word lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten , which means "spring." As part of tradition, worshipers will have ashes rubbed on their forehead in the form of a cross. The use of ash symbolizes penance and remorse. Other traditions include, giving up a favorite food or pleasurable activity and giving back to the community.
