Active 2017 hurricane season comes to end

NEW BERN, Craven County - Thursday marked the end of an active hurricane season in 2017.

According to data from the National Weather Service, it was the most active since 2012. It was the highest number of major hurricanes, that's category 3 and above, since 2005. The first tropical system, Arlene, came in April -- a full month before the start of the season.

Our first official hurricane was Franklin in August. Then the tropics got really active as nine others followed. That hasn't happened since 1893. The peak month of September saw six hurricanes, two of which reached Category 5 status.

The 2017 hurricane season was also the costliest on record. Harvey's damage amounted to $198.6 billion. It was the fifth Harvey's damage was part of the fifth most active season overall, leading to at least 438 deaths with Irma killing at least 134.
