BOONE - Three current or former Appalachian State University football players are facing charges after a fourth team athlete was stabbed last month.

Boone police said Friday the charges stem from serious stabbing injuries suffered by 21-year-old Appalachian State linebacker Teh'Ron Fuller during a parking lot scuffle with several people.

Police said they've charged 19-year-old Ke'monte Hayes, 21-year-old Isaiah Lewis and 21-year-old Marlin Johnson with misdemeanor assault and battery. The university's athletics department said Lewis and Hayes were suspended indefinitely from the football team. Johnson appeared as a Mountaineers wide receiver in 2015 but is no longer on the team.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports 23-year-old Malik Simpson was charged with felonious assault with a deadly weapon the day after the May 4 stabbing. Detectives say more arrests may be coming.
